From Empire to Alliance - The territory that became the UAE was shaped by centuries of foreign influence, beginning with Portuguese control over the Strait of Hormuz in the 16th century. British influence later expanded through treaties and military campaigns, eventually turning the Trucial States, focused on protecting trade routes to India. After Britain withdrew in 1971, the UAE was formed with Saudi support, and both nations developed close strategic ties through the Gulf Cooperation Council and shared security interests. Yemen and the Emerging Rift - Saudi Arabia and the UAE initially cooperated in Yemen after intervening against the Houthis in 2015, but their objectives gradually diverged. The UAE backed the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a separatist movement seeking to restore an independent South Yemen, while Saudi Arabia supported Yemen’s internationally recognised government.
