When one thinks of horror movies, one usually thinks of a series of traumatizing events that the protagonist eventually overcomes, leading to an ending filled with hope. Well, you can kiss that goodbye; this is not a James Wan movie, and since life itself is bleak, this movie captures it extremely well. A good horror movie should absolutely leave you with a sense of dread, because what do you mean everything went back to normal at the end of the first Conjuring? Your mother chases you around with murderous intent, and granted, she was possessed at the time, but you can’t just go back and hug her after she literally tried to skin you alive.
