B.C.’s Chief Coroner Dr. Jatinder Baidwan announced Tuesday that his office would start a coroner’s inquest into last month’s mass killings in the community of Tumbler Ridge. Baidwan said his office’s investigation would look into several key areas, including access to mental health support and services in rural areas and “how individuals in crisis are identified and supported.” He said the inquest would also examine “matters relating to gender diversity” where relevant to the evidence. Emergency response and coordination will also be examined as part of his office’s investigation, he said. Jesse Van Rootselaar shot and killed her mother and 11-year-old half-brother at their home, before killing five students, a teacher’s aide and then herself, at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on Feb. 10.
