Limited Deals, Big Headlines - The Beijing meeting produced agreements on Boeing aircraft, soybeans, beef imports, AI safety talks, and trade cooperation, but many details mainly came from the U.S. side. China’s readouts were far less specific, raising questions about how concrete some of these announcements really are. While the talks reduced tensions temporarily, many of the agreements could easily be reversed in the future. AI and Semiconductors Remain Central - One important area of interaction between the two superpowers is in semiconductors. The United States continues trying to keep China one generation behind in advanced semiconductors, while China rapidly develops open-source AI models and domestic chip production. NVIDIA H200 chips have reportedly been approved for China, but more advanced Blackwell chips remain restricted under export controls. This technological rivalry is becoming one of the most important battlegrounds in the wider U.S.-China geopolitical competition.
