Prime Minister Mark Carney stressed the importance of Alberta on Friday, a day after Premier Danielle Smith said she would put the question of whether or not to hold a referendum on separation to Albertans. The largely symbolic move could pose a major challenge for Carney as he pushes for national unity in the face of U.S. tariffs. “Canada is the greatest country in the world, but it can be better… we’re working with Alberta on making it better,” Carney said. Smith said in a paid televised speech on Thursday that she would add a question to the Oct. 19 referendum on whether or not to move forward with a referendum on secession.
