At a press conference on Friday, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith defended her government’s proposed referendum question, saying Albertans deserve a vote on whether the province should begin the legal process toward a future separation referendum from Canada. Smith repeatedly said she supports Alberta remaining in Canada, but argued frustration over federal energy, immigration and provincial policies has fueled growing separatist sentiment. The premier also pushed back against criticism from both separatists and pro-Canada groups, saying more than 700,000 Albertans signed petitions demanding the issue be debated. Smith says she plans to campaign throughout the summer in support of Alberta staying in Canada.
