Prime Minister Mark Carney touted his government’s housing strategy as he toured an EK Homes construction site in Ottawa on Monday, indicating that home sales at the site had increased by 65 per cent. Carney promised in his 2025 election platform to make investments that would double the pace of housing construction over the next decade to drive down the costs of rent and home ownership. However, in its 2026 housing outlook, the Canadian Housing and Mortgage Corporation (CMHC) projected that a slow economy would drive a decline in new home building over the next three years, falling to 216,000 starts in 2028. On Monday, Carney talked about the measures his government has taken to boost housing construction across Canada and bring down housing prices, including cutting GST and HST on new housing and slashing development charges.
