Pope Leo XIV has called for greater regulation of the weaponisation of AI. The pontiff’s remarks came during his reading of the first major teaching document of his papacy, called an Encyclical. The Pope began by recognising the prevalence of AI in both society and warfare. The pontiff said emerging digital technologies require moral guidance and appropriate legal oversight, warning that AI could pose significant challenges for humanity if left unchecked. Pope Leo asserted that Artificial Intelligence needs to be ‘disarmed’.
