NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said Tuesday that NASA would “leverage” its relationships with private space firms to build a home base for astronauts on the lunar surface. “What we are embarking on is extremely challenging, and we know so little from what is a combined 80 hours of lunar astronaut EVA time across the Apollo missions – and that was more than half a century ago,” he said. Isaacman said the agency has sent a “demand signal” to industry for “a lot of landers and rovers and tech demonstrations” as it determines what a base on the lunar surface will look like. NASA is expected to launch a crew to rest rendezvous and docking capabilities between the Orion spacecraft and commercial spacecraft as part of the Artemis III mission in 2027, which is necessary to land astronauts on the moon.
