The annual Greasy Pole contest, one of the signature events of St. Peter’s Fiesta in Gloucester, Massachusetts, begins today and attracts spectators from around the globe. The Greasy Pole features a 40-foot telephone pole coated in biodegradable grease and covered with banana peels, orange rinds, eggs, and fish guts. The pole extends from a 12-by-12-foot platform positioned about 200 yards off Pavilion Beach.
