Prime Minister Mark Carney has revealed a plan on Friday to restore 24 Sussex Drive. It has been the prime minister’s official residence since 1951 and fallen into disrepair, remaining vacant since 2015. While some have called for the 158-year-old mansion to be demolished, Mark Carney argues it is worthy of restoration. “It’s a symbol of the public office of the head of our federal government and of the democratic traditions that office represents and yet it has not been cared for the with respect that it deserves,” he said. A design-and-build competition, led by world-renowned Canadian architect Moshe Safdie, aims to have a winner announced by Canada Day 2027.
