On June 26, 1976, the CN Tower opened to the public. Ever since its construction, it has been an iconic part of Toronto’s skyline. On Friday, free admission was provided for guests and staff gave out 553 birthday cupcakes, one for every metre of the tower’s height. The CN Tower's construction began in 1973 and more than 1,500 workers poured concrete at a rate of about 15 to 16 feet a day. It held the record as the tallest freestanding structure until 2009, when it was surpassed by Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.
