UN procures 10,000 body bags as search operations continue following Venezuela’s twin earthquakes

Local and international rescue teams are racing against the clock to pull survivors from the rubble in Venezuela more than four days after two powerful earthquakes shook the northern state of La Guaira. Rescuers freed several survivors from mountains of debris over the weekend, including one man who had been trapped under rubble for over four days. The government has reported 1,450 deaths from Wednesday’s quakes with thousands still reported missing. The United Nations predicts the death toll to be even higher than what’s currently confirmed according to resident coordinator in Venezuela, Gianluca Rampolla Del Tindaro. "At least 2,500 structures are affected, most of which fully collapsed. So, we are definitely looking at a number that is higher than the one already reported. I can give you an approximate indicator. We are procuring, and this is something that has been agreed with the authorities here, 10,000 body bags," Tindaro said.
