Ever since George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead from 1968 helped redefine the modern screen zombie, these creatures have become a staple of the horror genre alongside monsters such as vampires and werewolves. Earlier zombie stories were strongly connected with Haitian folklore and fears involving enslavement and the loss of free will. Romero’s flesh-eating creatures were different. In fact, Night of the Living Dead called them ghouls rather than zombies, but their portrayal became so influential that audiences eventually applied the zombie label to them.
