An area of Manhattan was evacuated on Tuesday as officials deemed a high-rise that was under construction to be at risk of collapse. Firefighters were called to the 37-storey office tower, a former Pfizer headquarters being converted into luxury apartments, after reports of bricks falling from the high-rise. Nearby buildings, including a school with approximately 400 children, were evacuated after crews determined support beams inside the building had buckled and that, as a result, it had become unstable. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said engineers were using drones to monitor the building and working to stabilize it. The tower is part of the city’s largest office-to-residential conversion project, with over 1,600 planned units.
