‘They will take them out’: Australia ‘not ready’ to protect $368b nuclear sub investment

Defence and Strategic Policy Analyst Marcus Hellyer says the “first thing” adversaries will do is take out Australia’s nuclear-powered submarines while they are in port. “Issues around range are very solvable, and we are constantly seeing drones being developed, whether they are aerial drones, maritime surface drones, or undersea drones," Mr Hellyer told Sky News Australia. “They’re all getting longer range, becoming much more accurate, and the level of autonomy that they can operate with is also increasing,” he said. “All those things mean that drones, whichever kind we’re talking about…are becoming a much bigger threat. “We’ve already seen the Ukrainians take out Russian submarines in port; the Americans have just copied that, taking out a small Iranian submarine in port. “The first question that I have is: what are we doing to prepare ourselves, not just to protect our current submarines…but that $368 billion investment we’re making in nuclear-powered submarines? “The first th
