The Civilization strategy game series has been among my favourites (with Simcity, Cities Skylines, the Paradox Grand Strategy ones and Total War). But because of my busy academic schedule over the past few years I haven’t had the opportunity to play much of anything at all. Now, finally I get the opportunity to see how far these games have come. For me these grand strategy games are brilliant learning (and teaching tools). Some of them are advanced enough to be called Geohistory Simulators (almost but not quite). It is one of my goals to create one. And the theoretical work I have conducted for my PhD I believe creates a very good foundation for it (more on that later; as I await the final assessment). If you play strategy games, you would be happy to know that there are academic studies which prove you have superior managerial skills. I will share a review of one of these studies. For how, here’s 30 minutes of me trying out Civilization VII.
