At a press conference on Thursday, Ontario's Natural Resources Minister Mike Harris and Indigenous Affairs Minister Greg Rickford said wildfire conditions are improving, with more than 80 fires extinguished over the past two weeks and additional crews from across Canada and Mexico supporting suppression efforts. Officials said about 2,000 people remain evacuated from 14 northern communities while five communities have returned home. The ministers also defended the province's response against criticism from First Nations leaders, saying the priority remains protecting lives and supporting evacuees while active fires continue to burn.
