As Canada's wildfire season heats up following a slow start, the impact can be seen in our changing climate. In 2023, Canada’s wildfire season was the worst on record, burning 15 million hectares. However, three-quarters of those wildfire emissions didn’t come from burning trees or vegetation. New research from McMaster University is highlighting where most of the country's wildfire emissions are coming from, and as Jeff Semple explains, the source still smoulders long after the flames are out.
