Department of Homeland Security Secretary (DHS) Markwayne Mullin told National Governors Association (NGA) Chair and Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R), that immigration reform is currently impossible during the NGA meeting in Oklahoma City on Saturday. "Is immigration reform possible? No," Secretary Mullin said. "Do you really need immigration reform? Yes, you do, but can you work with the system we have? Yes." The DHS Secretary argued that the U.S. needs immigration reform, but the political divide has made it impossible, calling for policy change on permanent work permits to address labor shortages. "If we're looking to grow our economy, then we need to look at making more permanent solutions on this," he said. Secretary Mullin's post on X, shortly after the meeting, "NO amnesty for illegal aliens," sparked a wave of backlash from conservative critics, who argued that the post contradicted his earlier comments on immigration.
