Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Wednesday that his government will invest $2.7 billion over the next three years ‌to build rental housing in Toronto, as part of his ‌efforts to ease affordability pressures in the country's most populous city. Under a deal with ‌Toronto, the Canadian government will invest to build ‌more than 18 housing projects aiming to deliver over 5,600 new rental units, including some 1,800 affordable, supportive or rent-controlled ‌homes, Carney told the media. "Too many Torontonians have been struggling to afford their rent. Today’s announcement is part of changing that," ‌Carney said. He was joined by Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, who thanked the prime minister, "If you work here, you should be able to afford to live here. Thank you, Prime Minister, for your commitment to the people of Toronto."
