World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned that the ongoing spread of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is worsening, and now at an unprecedented speed. “I’m deeply, deeply concerned by how the situation is on the ground,” Ghebreyesus said at a Wednesday press conference in Kinshasa – the DRC’s capital. He continued: “Unless we're faster, we cannot catch up... It's moving fast and it's ahead of us. We're playing catch-up, but from a very far distance now.” The outbreak has spread to five provinces since it was declared in May, with government figures showing over 3,850 cases and roughly 1,750 deaths. Furthermore, the WHO has warned the true scale of the epidemic could be two to four times larger than official figures as infections continue to emerge outside known chains of transmission.
