Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw was joined by Det. Sgt. Stacey McCabe to give an update on the deadly shooting at one of Toronto’s most popular street festivals in July. Two people were killed and several others injured when bullets flew during the Salsa on St. Clair festival on July 11, prompting the cancellation of its second day. Police said the two men who were killed were targeted and that they knew each other. Demkiw spoke at an unrelated news conference Thursday, announcing that the force has “apprehended the persons responsible” for the shooting. The incident has intensified fears over gun violence and raised questions about the level of safety at community events, even as police say shootings are on the decline. This weekend marks the return of Taste of the Danforth, a popular food fest, and organizers say they have been working with police and private security for months on a “comprehensive” safety plan.
