Spain imposes retaliatory border controls on Italy as EU tensions over migration escalate

Spain is imposing border controls for sea and air travel from Italy from midnight on Saturday local time until September 7. Italy introduced similar measures after the Spanish city of Ceuta saw a mass influx of migrants from Morocco last week. Tensions between Spain’s socialist leader Pedro Sanchez and Italy’s conservative Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have been high recently over EU migration rules.
