A wave of cyberattacks have targeted municipal water infrastructure in at least a dozen U.S. states. Hackers began exploiting internet-facing programmable logic controllers (PLCs) in July, with hackers remotely changing administrative passwords, manipulating water pressure, and locking out water infrastructure operators. The New York Times has reported that intelligence analysts strongly suspect Iran-backed hacker groups are responsible, although President Trump has rejected this possibility.
