B.C. has declared a provincial state of emergency as the fast-moving Bald Range wildfire has forced more than 20,000 people from their homes in the province’s largest evacuation event of the summer. Premier David Eby said homes and properties have been destroyed, while some people became trapped by rapidly changing conditions and had to be rescued. Wildfire officials said the blaze was exhibiting aggressive and volatile rank 5 and 6 behaviour, with Eby saying it grew by 1,000 hectares in just one hour at one point. Officials said 18 aircraft were used to rescue more than 50 people as crews continue search and rescue operations, structure protection and efforts to contain the fire.
