US bans imports of avocados from Mexico, cites unspecified threat

In a show of force this week, Mexico deployed more than 1,500 troops to the western state of Michoacán to secure one of its biggest exports — avocados. This comes after the U.S. suspended all operations in the region, citing what it called a threat to U.S. interests and in turn shut down all agricultural inspections for pests which also meant it could no longer export to the U.S. As Jackson Proskow reports, It’s estimated that 70-80 per cent of production is sent to the U.S. and will have a significant impact on the Mexican economy.
