Health officials announced a proposal Monday that would require manufacturers to notify the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) when introducing new additives in their products. The proposed rule aims to close the "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) loophole, which currently allows companies to self-certify that certain food chemicals or substances are safe without notifying the FDA. "Today's proposed rule seeks to formally update FDA regulations to require any person introducing a new GRAS substance or use into the food supply to notify the agency of the basis for that GRAS conclusion, unless an exemption applies," acting FDA commissioner Kyle Diamantas said. "This transition from a voluntary to a mandatory notification program would close a decades-old information gap that would give FDA greater visibility into the substances used in human and animal food." #gras #rfkjr #fda #cspan
