Reinforcements are arriving in the battle against a deadly wildfire in southern B.C. that has forced 20,000 people to evacuate and has claimed the life of an 80-year-old woman. 100 Mexican firefighters are joining the battle against the Bald Range fire, which now spans about 156-square-kilometres, and has destroyed numerous homes in the region. Global’s Miranda Anthistle spoke with the Mayor of Summerland, Doug Holmes, who says the community’s 12,000 residents won’t be going home anytime soon. “We can’t really even think about returning until the fires under control, and it’s not under control yet,” said Mayor Holmes. In terms of rebuilding, Holmes says, “the hardest part is still to come,” as officials focus on putting a re-entry plan in place.
