Researchers at McMaster University have identified the cause of a mysterious black grime that's been blanketing parts of Hamilton for years. Residents say it's noticeably worse in the last month, with the grime staining clothes, shoes, furniture and even skin. In a study dubbed 'What the Grime', the team at McMaster imaged and processed samples and discovered the soot contains toxic chemicals, and industrial coal combustion is the likely source. The researchers are concerned about the health impact it could have on small children and pets.
