Over 100 active wildfires are burning in British Columbia right now, with many classified as “out-of-control.” Help from outside of the province is pouring in, with hundreds of firefighters and wildfire personnel arriving from places as far away as Mexico and Costa Rica, and as close by as Yukon and Alberta. From Alberta alone, 226 firefighters and 45 other personnel have been deployed, along with four helitankers, two air tankers and an additional two helicopters to help mitigate the spread. Global’s Miranda Anthistle speaks with Alberta Forestry and Park Wildfire Information Officer Caroline Charbonneau for details of the ongoing, collaborative firefighting efforts. Being no stranger to wildfires – and with much training in B.C. – Charbonneau says Alberta personnel offer seamless collaboration in the ongoing fire fight.
