Maharashtra’s food safety system has come under intense scrutiny after IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe took charge as Maharashtra FDA Commissioner and launched a series of strict inspections and enforcement actions across the state. From famous Mumbai restaurants and elite clubs to quick commerce dark stores, institutional canteens and Ayurvedic medicine manufacturers, several establishments have faced action over hygiene, licensing and compliance violations. Between May 25 and July 31, FDA teams inspected 3,137 food establishments, suspended 165 licences and seized or destroyed more than 28.66 lakh kg of unsafe food worth over ₹55.72 crore. The crackdown also reached a Blinkit dark store in Mumbai, where cockroaches, expired products and poor storage conditions were found, while action was taken against establishments including Noor Mohammadi, Shalimar, K Rustom, the Cricket Club of India, Willingdon Sports Club and Juhu Gymkhana.
