Reactions are mixed following Tuesday night’s public meeting with Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher, where he addressed allegations of racism and abuse by members of the force. Disturbing allegations that were made in June have led to three officers being suspended, another three being placed on administrative duties, and 10 officers being transferred to different stations. People went to Tuesday’s meeting to get answers about ending racial profiling and racist behaviour by police, and most left the meeting disappointed, wanting more from the chief. Attendee Cassandra Exumé reflected on his lack of an apology, saying “I felt like he missed a great opportunity to show how much he cared about us.” As Phil Carpenter reports, others are more hopeful, arguing that the situation is complicated.
