Humans have always relied on rivers; now some in Europe have never been dryer like the Rhine in Germany. Shippers who use rivers have had to turn to trucking instead, which is slower and significantly more expensive. Heat wave after heat wave in Europe this summer have reduced rivers like the Danube. The Danube’s tributaries flow through nearly 20 countries, and its waters are economic arteries. And as Global’s Nathaniel Dove reports, the low water levels are also forcing nuclear power plants to shut down.
