On 8 March 1988, Punjab's biggest music star, Amar Singh Chamkila, arrived at Mehsampur village with his wife and singing partner Amarjot Kaur. Within seconds of stepping out of his car, three masked attackers on a motorcycle opened fire with automatic rifles. Chamkila, Amarjot and two members of their group were killed. Chamkila was only 27. But who ordered his murder? Was it Khalistani militants who had previously threatened him over his songs? Was it a case of caste hatred? Professional rivalry? Extortion? Or a personal feud? In this episode of Crime Seen, we trace Chamkila's extraordinary rise from a poor Dalit family and textile-mill worker to one of Punjab's biggest musical stars, his controversial songs, the threats against him, his meeting with militant leaders, and finally the assassination at Mehsampur. We also examine the major theories surrounding his murder and why the identities of the three shooters were never established.
