The US state of Hawaii has declared a state of emergency as Tropical Storm Lala approaches the islands. The storm is expected to intensify into a hurricane before reaching the Big Island. The US National Hurricane Centre forecasts rainfall amounts between 20.3 and 30.5 centimetres across Maui and the Big Island. Authorities have warned that the storm could cause flooding and mudslides in higher-elevation areas.
