Nepal’s deadly flood disaster has left hundreds dead, thousands missing and authorities struggling to identify recovered bodies. On August 26, a sudden glacier-related collapse in Rasuwa triggered a powerful flow of water and debris, devastating villages, roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure across northern Nepal. By August 30, official figures recorded 788 deaths, more than 4,000 people missing and over 9,500 rescued. With morgues overwhelmed and bodies rapidly decomposing, authorities were forced to carry out mass burials and cremations in Chitwan, while preserving DNA samples and detailed records to help families identify their loved ones later. In this video, we explain why Nepal resorted to mass burials, the scale of the disaster, the families still searching for missing relatives and what the tragedy reveals about the growing risks facing the Himalayan region. Watch the full video to understand Nepal’s flood disaster and the crisis of unidentified bodies. #NepalFlood
