U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed (D-MI) on Monday called President Trump an "asshole" for starting a trade-war with Canada and criticized opponent Mike Rogers (R-MI) for having "no choice but to rubber stamp" these policies. President Trump's trade-war with Canada impacts various states including Michigan, where Canada is a major trading partner. It could also have an effect on Michigan's manufacturing sector from the rising costs in import taxes. "So if you're starting a trade war with Canada is cause you're the asshole," the Sen. candidate said at a Democratic Party press conference in Detroit, Michigan. "And here we are with Mike Rogers. He has no choice but to rubber stamp, to roger a trade war that is now costing the Michiganders that he says he wants to serve, nearly $6000 a year," he continued. A week ago, the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on various Canadian imports, leading to similar retaliatory tariffs by Canada on the U.S. that are set to take effect
