Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced Wednesday that the current pause on the federal excise tax on gasoline and diesel will be extended until at least Jan. 31, 2027. The federal excise tax on gasoline was 10 cents per litre, and the tax on diesel was 4 cents per litre, but those taxes were suspended in April. The suspension was set to end on Sept. 8. Though the tax holiday is now set to end on April 1, Champagne revealed that the tax will be half its regular rate between Feb. 1 and March 31. Why? The finance minister said fuel prices are being pushed higher as a result of renewed hostilities in the ongoing U.S.-Iran war. The announcement falls in line with an ongoing social media campaign to “Scrap Carney’s Labour Day Gas Tax Hike” from the federal Conservative Party.
