Madrid residents joined a nationwide day of protests on Wednesday in solidarity with the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, which is grappling with an unprecedented migration crisis following a mass border surge from neighboring Morocco in late July. “We have to support Ceuta. A united Ceuta will never be sold out. Ceuta is Spanish, not Moroccan. Ceuta, Spain,” one demonstrator said. Nearly five weeks after at least 72,000 people crossed into Ceuta, local authorities estimate that more than 10,000 migrants remain in makeshift camps or scattered across the enclave's streets and beaches, fuelling tensions and near-daily demonstrations by residents.
