Group Captain Abhinandan Varthaman, the Indian Air Force fighter pilot who became a national figure after the 2019 India-Pakistan aerial engagement, has taken a major turn in his aviation career. After nearly 22 years of service, Abhinandan took premature retirement from the Indian Air Force on March 31, 2026. He has now joined Goa-based regional airline FLY91 and is undergoing training to fly the ATR 72-600, marking his transition from military aviation to commercial aviation. But why did Abhinandan leave the IAF early? Why are military and fighter pilots able to transition into commercial aviation? And what exactly does the journey from a fighter cockpit to an airline cockpit involve? In this video, we revisit Abhinandan’s remarkable 2019 story, from the Balakot airstrike and the aerial engagement with Pakistani aircraft to his ejection over Pakistan, around 60 hours in Pakistani custody, and his return to India. #AbhinandanVarthaman #IndianAirForce #IAF #FLY91 #CommercialPilot #
