A major new BMJ study establishes that at least 24.5% of former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 had CTE at death, with researchers calculating that the true prevalence could be substantially higher. The study also found that advanced Stage IV CTE was associated with dementia, while acknowledging that its population largely reflects players from earlier eras and cannot determine the risks facing today’s athletes. The findings arrive as football continues debating how much repeated head impact can be reduced without fundamentally changing the game. Ring of Fire's Josh G. discusses.
