Following the Satya Niketan PG building collapse, Jist reporters went on the ground to investigate the conditions in which hundreds of students are living. Our ground report reveals allegations of unsafe and unauthorised construction, extra floors, weak structures, extremely narrow staircases and corridors, poor water and food conditions, high rents and security deposit disputes. Students also speak about the fear of raising their voices against PG owners. During the reporting, our team was confronted and allegedly manhandled by a PG owner while documenting the conditions inside a PG. The bigger question is why are students being forced to live in such unsafe conditions, and why does action come only after a building collapses and lives are lost? From illegal construction and student housing shortages to questions around government accountability, this report looks beyond the collapse to the system that allowed these conditions to continue.
