Canadian defence officials met with their Chinese counterparts for the first time in eight years last week. Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Jennie Carignan co-hosted the annual meeting of military leaders from Indo-Pacific countries on Sept. 4, in Victoria, B.C. China posted about the meeting online, writing, “The two sides had a candid and in-depth exchange of views on international and regional issues of mutual interest.” Canada did not announce the meeting, but confirmed it when Global News asked. A Canadian spokesperson said officials met in support of ongoing military-to-military communications at the functional level, adding, Canada’s engagement with China will be guided by a series of guardrails. Global’s Nathaniel Dove looks at the significance of the meeting.
