“Feels like betrayal”: Community reacts as VPD officer Kal Desanjh charged with theft, fraud

Community members are reacting to the news of the serious charges against Vancouver police office Kal Desanjh including fraud, theft over $5,000, and breach of trust for allegedly defrauding investors in three development projects. He’s also accused of stealing from KidsPlay. The allegations date from Dec. 2017 to July 2025 and according to the VPD, involve at least $3 million in losses. “It feels like a betrayal,” says Elenor Sturko, an independent MLA from Surrey-Cloverdale. The veteran Vancouver police officer is well known in the Lower Mainland for his charity work with youth. As Kristen Robinson reports, many who knew him are in shock.
