Sweeping Canadian counter-tariffs took effect on billions of dollars’ worth of American goods Tuesday, in the ongoing trade war with the U.S. The federal government calls the dollar-for-dollar tariffs on $27 billion worth of U.S. exports strategic. Prime Minister Mark Carney posted a 15-minute video, saying Canada has relied too much on one economic partner, and warning that tough times are ahead. As Canadian business and residents start to grapple with the new tariff landscape, questions are being asked about if counter-tariffs were the right move in the ongoing trade war. “The U.S. economy is 13 times the size of ours. I don’t think that’s a fight we're going to do well in," Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati said. Global’s Sean O’Shea has more on how Canadians are reacting to the retaliatory measures.
