On Aug. 26, catastrophic flash floods near the Nepal-China border killed hundreds of people and left thousands missing — roughly 5,000 people, according to Nepal’s disaster management agency. Monday marked the 13th day since the flooding, and Nepal held a day of mourning to honour the more than 1,300 people who were killed in the floods. Flags were lowered at government offices and families concluded mourning rituals. As relief efforts continue, workers have started using drones to deliver aid to communities stranded, with many residents displaced by the floods. A couple who lost their home revisits twice a day, trying to make sense of their reality. “It is not just me; no one has been able to identify the exact location of the houses. Everything has been destroyed,” resident Madhav Ghimire said. Officials are cautioning there is a significant risk of secondary disasters on both sides of the valley. Stephanie Hallihan has more.
