Saddle Lake First Nation has invoked a 150-year-old treaty clause to establish a “safe haven” for gender-affirming care on its reserve lands. The First Nation says the move will allow medical staff to provide protected and uninterrupted care to transgender and Two-Spirit youth. It comes after Alberta passed legislation prohibiting doctors from prescribing puberty blockers or hormone therapy to children under 16. “When one group’s rights are removed, all are affected,” Saddle Lake’s chief said.
