CBS News published a story scrutinizing deleted posts from Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed in which he compared the COVID death toll with September 11 and called for a similarly ambitious national response to public health and poverty. El-Sayed has repeatedly condemned the 9/11 attacks, while his campaign says his older posts were deleted as part of a broader removal of pre-2023 social media content. Separate reporting says CBS editor-in-chief Bari Weiss personally supported the story and pushed for the headline to emphasize September 11, prompting criticism from some staff members over the framing and editorial judgment.
