European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed opening a path for Canada to become the European Union’s (EU) first “associate member.” She made the announcement during her State of the EU address Wednesday morning with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in attendance. As U.S. President Donald Trump pushes further on economic and annexation threats against Canada, von der Leyen says Canada and the EU would build on their existing free trade agreement with a broader “alliance for the future.” Carney will give Canada’s answer to von der Leyen’s invitation Thursday, in a special address to the very same European Parliament.
